Too many residents of District 5 and Berkeley don’t feel “seen.” I’m ready to serve everyone on Day One, with all my heart, with the values born of my life experiences, and the good judgment born of my professional work, civic engagement, and leadership. Let’s focus on our core responsibilities and build a brighter day for Berkeley!

Meet Todd

I was born and raised in Iowa and came to the Bay Area after graduating from Harvard in 1988. I moved to Berkeley from Oakland in 1999 to get married and start a family.

My spouse and I were proud to raise our son and daughter through Berkeley public schools, coach their youth sports, and encourage other extracurricular interests like music and art. While they were in high school, I served on the Berkeley Athletic Fund Board from 2015 to 2020, to help bring equity to Berkeley High sports, having witnessed the disparities firsthand.

Being raised with strong social justice values, Berkeley felt like a progressive paradise to me, and I was happy to leave its governing up to others. I voted for every incumbent and for almost every ballot measure in my first 18 years here. But in 2018, as a result of an online disagreement, a fellow Berkeleyan and I gathered concerned residents to discuss local issues.

I soon realized that many of them did not feel “seen” by our government. Their truth was being overlooked. Our leaders checked all the boxes you would expect in a city like Berkeley, but many of them seemed to have lost interest in solving the actual problems of our daily lives.

My District Five Priorities

Proactively communicate with residents

Fix our streets & critical infrastructure

Prioritize public safety

Sound stewardship of public funds
